What is the best quick solution to this problem?
Remove all the peripherals except the hard drive and observe the results.
Move the laptop to another location and observe the results.
Replace the power adapter and observe the results.
Replace the USB hub and observe the results.
Flash the BIOS on the laptop and observe the results.
1. This question is not fair as it is too vague. A switch has a MAC address table that segments the network into separate collision domains; one on each port. But when it comes down to it, a normal, non configured switch, everyone who plugs into the switch will be in the same MAC broadcast domain (vlan1) and therefore not really segmented. You need a router and to implement VLANs to truely keep layer 2 and layer 3 from connecting.
2. EASY, remove the peripherals. Too much power to usb devices causes the computer to not work. I can not remember the limit. I think it was like 6 devices.
