How to make voltage out controllable DC power supply that displays the voltage supplied using a LED display?
I have some old power supplies that were removed from computers. I know that there is a transformer inside them that converts the 230V AC mains supply to a 12V DC voltage. I want to make a DC Power supply with two LED 7 segment displays, 1 showing the voltage and the other the current supplied, and I should be able to control the output voltage using a knob.
I am a person who recently discovered a passion for electronics, so I don't know much. I just know what the end product should be but I have no idea how to start. Can you please direct me to some websites, forums, books and would tell me exactly what to do. Thank you.
This would be a difficult project.
You can use a LM350, but that will get you only 1.2 volts to 10 volts, working from the 12 volt supply. And only a few amps. (You don't say how much current you want) You may be able to use the unregulated voltage inside which may be 15 volts or so. But the supply could use a switching regulator that gets very complicated and difficult to modify.
First thing you need to do is to trace out the schematic of the supply. Then measure voltages at critical points. Then examine the schematic with a view towards modifying it.
Now the meters. You can buy digital panel meters. If you want to do your own design, again, that gets very complicated. You have to futz with precision resistors, A-D converters, clocks, display drivers.
You might want to consider something simpler. Perhaps just the supply without the meters. You can get digital multimeters for a few dollars.
