simple splitter as 10baseT hub?
I have a network-ready TV and blu-ray player. I would like to connect both to a single Cat5 wall jack (run to the router). I would like to receive my YouTube and NetFlix with the TV, and just use the blu-ray's connection for occasional firmware updates. Neither application requires more service than my 3 Mbps DSL will provide.
I would like to avoid the necessity of running a mini network switch 24/7. I know I can go down to any office store and pick one up for $25. But, it just seems like a pointless source of heat and wasted power. Will it still work to use a simple telephone type RJ45 splitter? Are the connection schemes of 10baseT in decades past still technically viable, or will I run the risk of damaging equipment?
You seem a bit technically savvy so I'll give you the advanced answer.
There are 4 pairs in CAT5e and only 2 are needed to for each connection. You should be able to get at least 100mb if you have 4 pairs in your wall mount. But this assumes a few things:
1. That there are 4 pairs available
2. The cable in the wall is CAT5
3. That the cable can be made to be end-to-end (ie, no branching off to go to another room)
4. That you know how to make your own cables or are willing to buy an ethernet splitter.
For the most part, 10bT applies to 100bT, but doesnt apply to GigE.
