If you are new to electronic construction, you may prefer to buy a kit. You will have to learn/ read up / be shown how to solder safely and effectively (without burning yourself or the components, or creating a dry joint)
In the UK Maplin electronics is a good store for buying components and construction boxes (plastic or aluminium boxes of various sizes which you can cut holes in, drill etc. for exterior mounting of switches, displays etc. They also sell books and kits for home construction.

For an "open plan construction, many home experimenters will use a reusable "breadboard". This gets around the need for soldering in many instances.
